The Hunger Games is heading to the London stage

A new stage adaptation of The Hunger Games is in development, with plans to mount the show in London’s West End in 2024.

The Hunger Gamesstarted out as a book in 2008. Suzanne Collins’ dystopian novel saw youths from starving districts compete in a deadly battle royale, and became an immediate bestseller, spending more than 100 consecutive weeks on the New York Times’ bestseller list.

That was followed by an equally successful movie adaptation, which starred Jennifer Lawrence as the story’s heroine Katniss Everdeen. The film hit screens in 2012, and grossed nearly $700 million, from a reported $78 million budget. It also spawned a series of equally lucrative sequel.

Now the futuristic story is being transformed into a stage-play; one that’s set to his the West End next year.

The first stage adaptation of The Hunger Games will launch on the London stage in the fall of 2024.

The material is being adapted by Conor McPherson, whose previous credits include The Veil, The Night Alive, and Girl From the North Country. While the show will be directed by Matthew Dunster, whose recent plays include Hangmen and 2.22 – A Ghost Story.

Author Suzanne Collins said in a statement: “I’m very excited to be collaborating with the amazing team of Conor McPherson and Matthew Dunster as they bring their dynamic and innovative interpretation of The Hunger Games to the London stage.”

Speaking of Collins’ book, McPherson said: “She has created a classic story which continues to resonate now more than ever. In a world where the truth itself seems increasingly up for grabs, The Hunger Games beautifully expresses values of resilience, self-reliance and independent moral inquiry for younger people especially.”

While Dunster said in the same statement: “To add one of our greatest living playwrights, Conor McPherson, and experience him honoring the voice of Katniss Everdeen so rigorously has been a great privilege. This is theatre. It’s The Hunger Gamesin the theatre. And with the world-class team we have put together we aim to do something that is fully immersed in the novel and the film but is uniquely, thrillingly theatrical.”
