An Officer And A Gentleman Casts Teller In A Familiar Role

Damien Chazelle’s Oscar-winningWhiplashhelped propel Teller to stardom, and now a decade later, he will play a very similar role in Paramount’s plannedAn Officer and a Gentlemanremake. InWhiplash, Teller portrayed a young aspiring jazz musician being tutored by an uncompromising teacher, played by J.K. Simmons. Unless the script makes major changes to the original, Teller’sOfficer and a Gentlemanrole will see him again playing a man with big aspirations, who must achieve maturity by enduring the tutelage of a demanding mentor, in this case a hard-nosed drill instructor.

Though Gere had the lead in the originalOfficer and a Gentleman, the Oscar nominations went to his co-stars Winger and Gossett Jr., with the latter snagging a trophy. Coincidentally, Teller’sWhiplashco-star Simmons also won an Oscar, and for playing essentially the same role as Gossett. It’s yet to be seen who will play the drill instructor in the remake ofAn Officer and a Gentleman, but a reunion between Teller and Simmons would be interesting, if a little on-the-nose, as a casting choice.

An Officer and a Gentlemangrossed $190 million in 1982

Teller’sWhiplashandTop Gun: Maverickexperiences make him a seemingly solid choice to play the lead inAn Officer and a Gentleman,as his role basically seems like a cross between Andrew Neiman and Rooster. What’s yet to be seen is whether Teller can generate the kind of chemistry with a co-star that Gere enjoyed with Winger in the 1982 original, as they smoldered their way to becoming one of the most memorable on-screen couples of the 1980s.
