Summary
Palworldannounced its first major update at Summer Game Fest, and it includes so much content that the team said they weren’t able to fit it all in the trailer. WhilePalworldhas been receiving updates since it was released, none of them have been of the same scale that the Sakurajima update will be. Given the size of this update, it’s essentially being considered an expansion, thanks to all the content that’s coming with it.
The Sakurajima update is named after the island that’s being added. Aside from an entirely new island to explore, players can expect to see other additions, such asnew Pals, new bosses, new raids, new items, and an increased level cap. It looks like there won’t be any shortage of reasons to jump back intoPalworld, especially for players who’ve already done all they can with the currently available content.

Is Palworld Free-To-Play? Everything To Know About Price & Platforms
Wondering what platforms Palworld is on, what platforms it’s coming to, whether it has crossplay, and whether it’s free? Here’s everything to know.
Palworld Sakurajima Update - Release Date
Coming June 27
It won’t be long before players can start exploring the new island since therelease date for Sakurajima is set for June 22, 2025. Xbox players, in particular, might be looking forward to this release date since part of the update includes dedicated Xbox servers, and having dedicated servers tends to make the gaming experience much smoother. However, even solo players will find plenty to do once the update rolls out.
Palworld Sakurajima Update - New Pals
New Species And Subspecies Of Pals
From the trailer alone, there’s not an exact number given for how many new Pals are being added in the Sakurajima update. However, Pocketpair previously showed four of the new Pals during an IGN showcase in April, stating that they would be among themany new Palscoming in the summer update. The four previously shown Pals included a frog creature, what seems to be a peacock-inspired fire creature, a floating creature, and a mushroom dinosaur.
Then, the trailer shown at Summer Game Fest included glimpses of even more Pals that can be found on Sakurajima. There’s a creature with claws that seems like it’ll be proficient in mining, a creature that’s basically a mimic fromDungeons & Dragons, a ghost creature with lantern hands, and a creature clad in a suit of armor. However, since PocketPair mentioned previously that it plans on adding many new Pals, it’slikely that those that have been shown so far aren’t the only new onescoming in this update.

Incredibly Rare Palworld Pals Get Big Changes Thanks To Fun New Mod
Some of Palworld’s rarest critters just became even more unique thanks to a fun mod that introduces a range of Shiny variants with different colors.
As for the new subspecies being added, there’s only a quick glimpse of a couple shown in the trailer. It appears that they arenew elemental variations of existing Pals, which can open up new abilities to bring into a fight. It’s always nice to have access to a variety of element types with Pals since that means that a player should be able to capitalize on an enemy’s weaknesses using an element that’s strong against it. Like with new Pals, it’s highly likely that the few subspecies shown in the trailer won’t be the only ones added with the Sakurajima update.

Palworld Sakurajima Update - Game Modes
Arena And Oil Rig Stronghold
The Oil Rig Stronghold is included because it’s not clear if it’s part of a new mode in the trailer or if it’s simply an area that players can find off the shore of the island. However, Arena is definitely a new game mode, and it looks like it’ll be aPalworldPvP optionwhere players can test their strengths against each other. Having a contained area that allows for the chance to battle other players could be a big incentive to return to the game, and it adds replayability to keep players coming back even when they have finished the rest of the content that comes with this update.
Palworld Sakurajima Update - New Faction And Boss
An Unnamed Faction On The Island
The end of the trailer teases a glimpse of a new boss, who seems to be part of a faction that hasn’t yet been seen in-game. She sits on a crescent moon with her pal beside her, and they share a toast before the camera zooms out to show asymbol on the wall behind them. Flower petals in the air only add to the aesthetic and air of mystery surrounding her. However, as elegant as the image seems, she will likely be a formidable — and perhaps frustrating —Palworldboss fightwhen players find her on the new island.
The lastPalworldraid boss added was Bellanoir, made in a March patch.

Although it’s not likely connected to the new faction, there’s also anew raid coming in the Sakurajima update. Only a quick shot of it is shown in the trailer, but it seems to be a desert area. A pal that appears to combine fire and earth appears at the center of a circle of pillars, and it roars before a group of players and pals charge towards it to fight. Since a new raid means that a new raid boss is being added, it’s only fitting to mention it alongside the other new boss, even if they aren’t connected to the same faction.
How To Get (& Use) The Ancient Technical Manual In Palworld
Get extra Ancient Technology skill tree points by finding Ancient Technical Manuals in Palworld to get some of the best items in the game.
Of course, there are other, smaller, details that are being added in the Sakurajima update that were quickly mentioned in the trailer. To handle the new raid, faction, and boss, there’s anincreased level cap and new itemsthat players can add to their arsenal to help with exploring the island and facing unknown Pals. There are also new buildings to add to bases and, hopefully, new technology options that come with the additional levels. With all this new content, increasing the size of a base or adding a way to increase the base size in-game would be a welcome update.

So far, that’s what’s known about the upcoming Sakurajima update between the IGN showcase in April and the latest information from Summer Game Fest, but it’s certainly not a small amount of information, especially while knowing that not everything being added in the update was included. As a game that’s still in Early Access, this level of polished content coming in an update makes it feel like a game that’s been fully launched. However, this update continues to add to what seems to be a promising future for both the Early Access period and the eventual full release ofPalworld.
