Summary
The final trailer forInside Out 2recreates one of the best scenes from the original movie, and in doing so, it solved a franchise continuity problem. The Pixar sequel is one of the most highly anticipated movies of summer 2024, which is no surprise since the original was such a hit.Inside Outtook a unique approach to exploring emotional health, diving into the personified feelings of protagonist Riley, her parents, and several other characters as well.Inside Out 2has added new emotion characters to the mix, though this has complicated things a bit.
The firstInside Outmovie introduced Riley and her five emotion characters—Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear. This colorful bunch took turns managing Riley’s feelings and answered the foundational question, “What is going on inside their head?” Riley wasn’t the only one with these personified emotions. One of the best scenes ofInside Outsaw Riley sit down to dinner with her parents, and audiences had a chance to dive inside the adults' minds as well. It was a hilarious and relatable moment for the parents in the audience, andit looks likeInside Out 2has recreated it.

All 5 New Emotions In Inside Out 2 Explained
Pixar’s Inside Out 2 sees Riley go through puberty, which means a host of brand new emotion characters to make her life a little more complicated.
Riley Isn’t The Only One With New Emotions
Thetrailer forInside Out 2sees Riley and her parents again sit down for dinner. Of course, the protagonist is a teenager this time around, so while the first movie saw her sass her parents as Anger, Disgust, and Fear ran the show, this duplicated scene is sure to show the repercussions of Anxiety and the other new emotions ofInside outtaking over. In all, this scene starts similarly to its original counterpart. Mrs. Andersen asks Riley how camp was (rather than school as it had been inInside Out), and the teenager gives a short, bored answer—perhaps a sign that new emotion Ennui is in control.
The original dinner scene fromInside Outwas important because it not only showed how Joy and Sadness' absence was affecting Riley’s life, but it gave audiences their first look inside the Andersens' minds also. It looks as if this will happen again inInside Out 2,as the trailer reveals how Mr. and Mrs. Andersen’s inner emotions are reacting to Riley’s teenage indifference. What’s interesting about this is that a Mr. Andersen’s version of Anxiety is seen in the father’s headquarters, revealing that Riley isn’t the only one with an anxious orange headmate.

How Inside Out 2’s Final Trailer Explains The New Emotion Retcon
An Anxiety character inside Mr. Andersen’s mind subtly explains quite a bit about the upcoming movie. Ever since the teaser trailer forInside Out 2revealed that Riley was getting new emotions, there has been some confusion about how this works. It’s implied that Anxiety, Ennui, Embarrassment, and Envy are new emotions born from puberty, but this is strange sinceRiley’s parents, who are obviously postpubescent, hadthe same five emotions as Riley in the firstInside Outmovie. The same was true for the other teenage, adult, or even animal characters the first movie explored.
This seems to imply that the orange emotion comes and goes as needed, rather than staying in headquarters like the other emotions—explaining why Anxiety and other characters weren’t seen in his head in the first movie.

However,it’s clear in Mr. Andersen’s mind that Anxiety is a temporary visitor to his headquarters. His central five emotions all have seats in front of the control console, while Anxiety pops up from below and stands before the controls. This seems to imply that the orange emotion comes and goes as needed, rather than staying in headquarters like the other emotions—explaining why Anxiety and other characters weren’t seen in his head in the first movie.
Inside Out 2has already teased that Anxiety, Ennui, Embrarssment, and Envy are going to lock Joy and the gang up and take over headquarters, but the inside of Riley’s parents' minds show that this will only be temporary. It’s likely that once Riley adjusts to the pubescent emotions, the original five will take back control, while Anxiety and the others will be only occasional visitors at headquarters. It’s another layer added to the themes ofInside Out 2—the importance of well-balanced emotional health.
