Summary
TheHouse of the Dragonseason 2, episode 3 trailer previews the next step of the Dance of the Dragons. After an almost two-year wait, the popularGame of Thronesprequel series returned on June 16 with a season premiere that adapted the infamousBlood and Cheese storylinein which Daemon hires two assassins who murder Aegon and Helaena’s six-year-old son, Jaehaerys, as revenge for Luke’s death. Aegon is understandably enraged and angrily declares war, while Rhaenyra also disapproves of Daemon’s doing since it could decrease support for her cause.

House of the Dragonseason 2 episode 2mostly deals with the direct aftermath of Blood and Cheese, starting with a funeral procession for Jaehaerys through the streets of King’s Landing in which the Greens publicly blame Rhaenyra for slaying the six-year-old, despite Blood revealing that Daemon was responsible. Blood also reveals that the other assassin is a rat-catcher, leading Aegon to hang every royal rat-catcher from the city walls. Otto admonishes his grandson Aegon for acting impetuously, who responds by removing him as Hand of the King and installing Ser Criston Cole to replace him.

Criston previously impressed Aegon with his surprisingly brilliant plan to send Ser Arryk to Dragonstone to pose as his twin brother, Ser Erryk, and kill Rhaenyra. Arryk makes it all the way to Rhaenyra’s room before Erryk bursts in to save her. After a battle between brothers,Erryk kills Arryk, but he falls on his sword immediately after since he can’t bear having killed his twin brother.The duel of the Cargyll twins, and the episode 3 trailer, highlight the losses both the Black and Greens face, with no real winners on either side.

The episode 3 trailer sees Daemon going off alone to secure Harrenhal, a major strategic stronghold in the coming war due to its proximity to King’s Landing. Cole also recognizes this, and convinces Aegon to send an army off to war. Meanwhile, one of Rhaenyra’s council members argues they flex their 6 to 4 dragon advantage. However,Rhaenyra, always advocating for restraint, argues that “if dragons begin fighting dragons, we invite our own destruction.“Rhaenys shares similar sentiments, saying “it’ll be savage beyond all compare.” Nevertheless, both sides continue to march closer and closer to all-out war.
