Summary

With the recent announcement ofDragon Quest 3 HD-2Dand remakes for the first threeDragon Questgames, the new version may be getting more than just a visual overhaul. Known collectively as the Erdrick Trilogy, the first three games in theDragon Questseries tell separate but interconnected stories, and are widely considered as foundational games to both the series that they belong to and the RPG genre as a whole. And, while each game has received some form of re-release on more modern platforms, the upcomingDragon Quest 3 HD-2Dremake is promising a much more comprehensive revamp of each game.

As has been spotted by some keen-eyed fans, like@Petchigoo on X, however,theDQ3 HD-2Dremake could be bringing new vocations to the gamealongside the visual update. A brief shot in the trailer for theDragon Quest 3remake, as well asthe physical goods for the Collector’s Edition, seems to show one party member that resembles depictions of the Monster Masher vocation, which so far has only appeared inDragon Quest 7in English. The class centers around using the abilities of monsters, and, inDragon Quest 7, could also recruit them for that game’s Monster Meadows side activity.

Dragon Quest 3 Remake’s Release Date Is Continuing My Favorite New DQ Trend

With the release date for Dragon Quest III HD-2D remake now being set for November, it’s continuing a recent DQ trend that I absolutely adore.

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake Is Adding A New Vocation

The Monster Masher Is New To DQ3

While adding new vocations would make the remakes not entirely faithful to the gameplay content of the original games, it wouldn’t be the first time aDragon Questremakehas changed vocations from the original game.Dragon Quest 7, for example, was originally released on PlayStation, but later received a 3DS remake which made major changes to the game’s vocation system, heavily rebalancing it and even changing which vocations could get which skills.

Additionally, while the first threeDragon Questgames are hugely influential and widely regarded as all-time classics, their gameplay can also come off as somewhat basic by modern standards, especiallyDragon Quest IandII.Adding more vocations toDQ3, and potentially other new features, could be an attempt to add more depth to the classic game, especially since it lacked some of the more advanced, niche, or creative vocations that were added in later titles.

Previews and sneak peeks at the remake ofDragon Quest 3have indicated that the game will have some significant gameplay changesfrom the original, including the new Monster Masher vocation. While no gameplay for the vocation has been revealed, and it technically hasn’t been confirmed by name officially, its inclusion in promotional materials, as well as the series' past history with remakes, means that it’s a relatively safe bet to expect it. Whatever the case, theDragon Quest 3 HD-2Dand the other upcoming remakes are promising to bring three all-time classics to modern audiences in an updated form.
