Summary

Black Ops 6, the latest chapter in theCall of Dutyfranchise is right around the corner and based on reports,it’ll be the biggest game in the franchise but in this case, that might not be such a good thing. Over the last few years, the install size for each subsequentCall of Dutyrelease has ballooned, resulting in games that often require hundreds of gigabytes of free space. Given that storage has become a commodity in the current console generation thanks to more expansive AAA releases, players are becoming tired of such massive games.

Per the game’s official listing onXbox’s site,Black Ops 6will require a staggering 309.85 GB of storage space to install and play, makin it hands down the largestCall of Dutyto date. The size has already sparked an outcry from fans, many of whom insist that can’t justify freeing up that much space on their respective device for a single game. It’s entirely possible that over the next few months the game is further optimized to reduce the requirement but given its exhorbitant size, it’s doubtful that it’ll drop too much lower than its current state.

Activision Stuffs A Lot Into Those Games

While it’s certainly true that each annual release ofCall of Dutyneeds to be optimized to be compatible with the free-to-playstandaloneWarzonemode, there’s still rampant speculation as to why the games continue to increase in install size. One of the more common theories is that because the three game modes (Multiplayer, Zombies, and Campaign) are developed as seperate entities, each one takes up the size of a single game. When united, the overall scale increases in turn.

That may be a common belief but theCall of Dutycommunity has a different answer as many believe the game’s don’t implement compression to reduce the size of the more realistic textures.Keeping textures uncompressed results in higher frame rates, given that whatever device is running the game will need to dedicate less power to restoring any decompressed filesin active use. Whatever the case may be, players will likely need to clear out some space on their PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
