Why Demon Slayer’s Muzan has Different Human Forms Explained

Muzan Kibutsuji shows different human forms throughout the story, and Demon Slayer’s official fanbook explains the reason for each disguise.

Why Muzan Couldn’t Find Kagaya Ubuyashiki BeforeDemon Slayer’s Hashira Training Arc

Ubuyashiki’s Household Has Been Hidden in a Complex Way Since the Sengoku Era

The leader of the corps is a position that has been held for generations by the head of the Ubuyashiki Clan, also known as Oyakata. The reason why Muzan couldn’t find Kagaya Ubuyashiki, the current Oyakata, before the events of the Hashira Training Arc was statedin an extra in volume 21 ofDemon Slayer’s manga, revealing that in the Sengoku Era, Kokushibo, Upper Rank Moon 1, attacked the Demon Slayer Corps’s mansion, killed the previous head of Ubuyashiki’s clan, the father of the Oyakata from that era, and brought his head to Muzan.

Since then, more effort has been put into hiding Oyakata’s residence, which led to the formation of the Kakushi, the rear support faction in charge of operative duties, who provide assistance to hide the locations of the Ubuyashiki’s family, the Corps, and the Swordsmith Village. Additionally, Ubuyashiki’s astuteness has helped keep them away from Muzan’s reach. This was shown in Demon Slayer’s Swordsmith Village Arc Season 3, episode 1, during Muzan’s reunion with the Upper Moons, when he complains about Ubuyashiki’s clan not being annihilated yet, and Kokushibo says that Ubuyashiki is very clever at concealing his whereabouts.

The main reason Muzan was now able to locate the Ubuyashiki household, even though he had always actively been trying to find and kill the clan, was due to Nakime. By receiving Kibutsuji’s blood, if a demon is able to adapt to the blood, it can bestow upon them even greater strength. After Muzan shares more of his blood with Nakime to turn her into the new Upper Moon 4, her detection abilities, which were already good, increase dramatically.Muzan makes Nakime search for Ubuyashiki’s mansion, and she’s able to eventually find it by tracking several Corps members.

Muzan Seeks To Eradicate the Demon Slayer Corps Due to Fear

Muzan Attempts To Annihilate Everything That Reminds Him of His Mortality

One of the reasons Kibutsuji detests the Demon Slayer Corps is its connection to the Sun Breathing. In the Sengoku Era, a swordsman using the Sun breathing style, who wasthe strongest demon slayer of all time, gravely injured Muzan. That’s why he wants to strengthen the demons to achieve the ultimate destruction of the demon slayers. Muzan wishes to become the perfect everlasting being, and that makes him try to eradicate everything that recalls his weakness.

Kibutsuji was born in the Heian period and was always close to death, even while in his mother’s womb, because of a terminal disease that would have killed him young if he had not become a demon. Because he is part of the Ubuyashiki Bloodline, he believes that if the family disappears completely, he will exterminate everything that ties him to his human self and remind him of his mortality. This confrontation between Muzan and Ubuyashiki’s clan is represented in the Hashira Training Arc ending theme, where the shadows show Kibutsuji killing the oyakatas of previous eras.

Kibutsuji Tracks the Demon Slayer Corps Location To Find Nezuko

Muzan Is Unable To Locate Nezuko Like He Does With the Other Demons

Kibutsuji can track down and read the thoughts of any demon to whom he has imparted his blood, but Nezuko, along with Tamayo and Yushiro, arethe only demons who were able to escape from his rule. Muzan wants to find Nezuko to absorb her, but since she broke free from his control, the only way he has to locate her is by finding the Demon Slayer Corps' whereabouts, as shown by Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc episode 6.

Muzan’s actions show that he’s undeniably a fearsome villain and good strategist, and it proves that theDemon Slayer’s author, Gotouge Koyoharu, not only already explained what seemed like a plothole in the story but also has everything planned to give more depth to Muzan’s character, from his pursuit of immortality, fears, egocentrism, and past to his interactions with other characters. For these reasons, the encounter of both leaders, Muzan and Ubuyashiki, one who unifies the feelings of others and inherits them and another who uses others and discards them, promises to be a highlight inDemon Slayer’s story.
